Rulon Stacey Character Analysis

Rulon Stacey is a Mormon man, the CEO of the Poudre Valley Hospital (where Matthew Shepard was treated), and the spokesperson for Matthew’s family. Throughout Matthew’s tenure at the hospital, Rulon communicates with the media to update the public on Matthew’s condition. Although Rulon objects to homosexuality for religious reasons, he expresses immense sympathy for Matthew’s family, and is moved to tears when he announces Matthew’s death. Rulon shows how, even for people who do not change their views on homosexuality, Matthew’s death inspires intense empathy and allows them to begin to understand the hatred that LGBT people regularly face.
