  • The greasers win the rumble, but Ponyboy is increasingly convinced that such fighting is useless.
  • Dally rushes with Ponyboy to the hospital to tell Johnny of their victory. Johnny is unimpressed.
  • Johnny tells Ponyboy to “stay gold” and dies.
  • Darry runs out of the hospital room.

  • Dally commits suicide by provoking the police with an unloaded gun and getting shot.
