About the Author
Harry Mulisch was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1927 to an Austrian father and Jewish mother. During World War II, Mulisch’s father worked for a German bank. Because of his father’s collaboration with the Nazis, Mulisch and his mother escaped being sent to a concentration camp. However, Mulisch’s maternal grandmother and great-grandmother both died in the concentration camps. After the war, Mulisch’s father went to prison for his actions as a collaborator. Mulisch moved the Amsterdam in 1958 and had three children. Over the course of his career, Mulisch authored over 80 works, many of which center around World War II. He is considered one of the greatest Dutch writers. Mulisch lived in Amsterdam until his death in 2010.
