One-Ear is the leader of the Others, the rival tribe to Moon-Watcher’s. At the outset of the novel, he and Moon-Watcher’s tribes, while confrontational, are unable to do real harm to one another. This changes with the arrival of the monolith, however. Unlike Moon-Watcher, One-Ear is not influenced by the monolith and is ill-prepared for his rival’s attack. Failing to comprehend the gulf between him and his weapon-bearing opponent, One-Ear stands his ground, quickly falling under Moon-Watcher’s club. As such, One-Ear testifies to the profound changes wrought upon humanity by the monolith. In only a few weeks, One-Ear is all but a different species, a remnant of a bygone era.
