The weaver is one of the aliens responsible for creating the original monoliths. Having transcended his material form, he now exists in the form of radiation. When Bowman encounters the weaver’s mind during his transformation as the Star-Child, he experiences it as a gigantic geometric grid. Summoning another monolith to distract Bowman, the weaver reshapes Bowman’s mind, as he had done millions of years ago to Bowman’s ancestors.
