A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones

by George R. R. Martin
Bran is Ned and Catelyn’s son and Robb, Sansa, Arya, and Rickon’s brother. He is also Jon Snow’s half-brother. Jaime pushes Bran out of a window after he sees Jaime and Cersei having sex, and the fall puts Bran in a coma. In that coma, Bran communicates with a three-eyed crow, who tells Bran to wake up from the coma and seems to, by doing that, save Bran’s life. That interaction, and Bran’s increasing propensity to spend time in the godswood (a sacred forest) after he awakens from the coma, suggest that Bran may have a latent capacity to communicate extra-sensorially with spiritual or magical beings. And while most people are dismissive of the idea that the Others could pose a threat—considering that they haven’t been seen in over 8,000 years—Bran listens intently to Osha when she discusses the threat the Others pose. After, Bran seems to seriously consider telling Robb that he is marching in the wrong direction when he takes his army south to meet the Lannisters, suggesting that Bran has a more holistic view of the world. After Bran is paralyzed in the fall, Tyrion designs a specially made saddle so that Bran can ride horses. Bran also faces ridicule following his paralysis. With that in mind, though Tyrion stands accused of plotting to kill Bran, the novel draws parallels between the two, suggesting that they have more in common than either might think.

Chapter 1: Bran Quotes

“Robb says the man died bravely, but Jon says he was afraid.”

“What do you think?” his father asked.

Bran thought about it. “Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?”

“That is the only time a man can be brave,” his father told him.

“If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die.”

“One day, Bran, you will be Robb’s bannerman, holding a keep of your own for your brother and your king, and justice will fall to you. When that day comes, you must take no pleasure in the task, but neither must you look away. A ruler who hides behind paid executioners soon forgets what death is.”

Chapter 17: Bran Quotes

Bran was falling faster than ever. The grey mists howled around him as he plunged toward the earth below.

“What are you doing to me?” he asked the crow, tearful.

Teaching you how to fly.

“I can’t fly!”

You’re flying right now.

“I’m falling!”

Every flight begins with a fall, the crow said.

Explanation and Analysis:

North and north and north he looked, to the curtain of light at the end of the world, and then beyond that curtain. He looked deep into the heart of winter, and then he cried out, afraid, and the heat of his tears burned on his cheeks.

Now you know, the crow whispered as it sat on his shoulder. Now you know why you must live.

“Why?” Bran said, not understanding, falling, falling.

Because winter is coming.

Chapter 20: Eddard Quotes

Remember why I came here, my love. If I find proof that the Lannisters murdered Jon Arryn …”

He felt Catelyn tremble in his arms. Her scarred hands clung to him. “If,” she said, “what then, my love?”

That was the most dangerous part, Ned knew. “All justice flows from the king,” he told her. “When I know the truth, I must go to Robert.” And pray that he is the man I think he is, he finished silently, and not the man I fear he has become.

Chapter 26: Jon Quotes

Fat and awkward and frightened he might be, but Samwell Tarly was no fool. One night he visited Jon in his cell. “I don’t know what you did,” he said, “but I know you did it.” He looked away shyly. “I’ve never had a friend before.”

“We’re not friends,” Jon said. He put a hand on Sam’s broad shoulder. “We’re brothers.”

And so they were, he thought to himself after Sam had taken his leave. Robb and Bran and Rickon were his father’s sons, and he loved them still, yet Jon knew that he had never truly been one of them. Catelyn Stark had seen to that. The grey walls of Winterfell might still haunt his dreams, but Castle Black was his life now, and his brothers were Sam and Grenn and Halder and Pyp and the other cast-outs who wore the black of the Night’s Watch.

Chapter 53: Bran Quotes

“To be a knight, you must stand your vigil in a sept, and be anointed with the seven oils to consecrate your vows. In the north, only a few of the great houses worship the Seven. The rest honor the old gods, and name no knights … but those lords and their sons and sworn swords are no less fierce or loyal or honorable. A man’s worth is not marked by a ser before his name. As I have told you a hundred times before.”

Chapter 67: Sansa Quotes

Sansa stared at him, seeing him for the first time. He was wearing a padded crimson doublet patterned with lions and a cloth-of-gold cape with a high collar that framed his face. She wondered how she could ever have thought him handsome. His lips were as soft and red as the worms you found after a rain, and his eyes were vain and cruel. “I hate you,” she whispered.

King Joffrey’s face hardened. “My mother tells me that it isn’t fitting that a king should strike his wife. Ser Meryn.”

The knight was on her before she could think, yanking back her hand as she tried to shield her face and back-handing her across the ear with a gloved fist. Sansa did not remember falling, yet the next she knew she was sprawled on one knee amongst the rushes. Her head was ringing. Ser Meryn Trant stood over her, with blood on the knuckles of his white silk glove.
