Summary
Analysis
Just like everyone else in Little Kilton (in Buckinghamshire, England), Pip (Pippa Fitz-Amobi) knows the house in town where the Singhs live. People leave graffiti on the house because they believe that Sal Singh committed a crime five years ago. Pip goes to investigate the house and sees Ravi, Sal’s brother. She explains that she’s working on a school project, an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), to try to prove Sal’s innocence. She wants to see Ravi later for a proper interview.
The first chapter of the novel establishes Pip’s reputation as a “good girl” by showing how seriously she takes her homework project. But it also hints at how she is willing to go against people’s expectations, rejecting the commonly held idea in her town that Sal is guilty of murder. This first chapter also establishes how small Pip’s town is, where one crime five years ago still inspires people to write graffiti about it.
