Explanation and Analysis:
A Long Walk to Water makes South Sudan the center of its story. The novel’s two main narratives occupy separate timeframes: Nya’s search for water takes place in 2008, while Salva’s trek across the country unfolds in 1985. Their stories are at once distinct and overlapping; though they don’t experience the same time periods, the two main characters share the novel’s pages. A Long Walk to Water overlays Nya and Salva’s stories together, often within a single chapter, to compelling narrative effect. Overlapping these double stories creates an impression of simultaneity, as though both their narratives are taking place at the same time.
