Summary
Analysis
In contrast with Navid and the rest of the crew, who are consumed by nerves when the school talent show comes around, Shirin claims that she doesn’t care about the outcome of the show. However, Shirin ultimately has a great time performing with her crew and is shocked when they win the entire competition. What’s even more shocking, though, is that people begin to treat Shirin completely differently after the talent show. People Shirin has never spoken to congratulate her, start talking to her in class, and even invite her to their parties. Although this is a positive change, Shirin grows frustrated because she ended her relationship with Ocean due to other people’s negative perceptions of her.
The quickness with which everyone begins treating Shirin like a popular kid seems to suggest that whatever opinions or prejudices previously prevented them from interacting with her were shallow and fickle. In other words, after Shirin performs in the talent show and displays the dance moves she’s worked so hard to perfect, everyone seems to finally wake up—and realize that she has a lot more going on than the fact that she wears a hijab.

A tired-looking Ocean runs into Shirin at her locker and tells her that he enjoyed her performance. When Shirin tells Ocean she misses him, he acts as though she slapped him and is obviously hurt. Shirin leaves in a rush and later realizes that she left her locker unlocked and that Ocean stole her diary and put it back.
