A Very Large Expanse of Sea: Chapter 5  Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Before Navid heads to school early, he runs into Shirin and tells her that she looks nice, but he finds her outfit confusing because her pants fit tightly. Shirin reflects on her relationship to her headscarf and thinks about how she doesn’t wear it to be modest. Instead, Shirin compares wearing a headscarf to wearing armor, which she enjoys because she feels protected and less vulnerable. Later, when Shirin is rehearsing with Jacobi at the gym after school, she runs into Ocean, who has recently taken to asking Shirin questions about her life in their biology class. Ocean explains that he spends a lot of time in the gym and thought he should say hello, but Shirin remains confused, uncertain why Ocean keeps trying to interact with her.
Wearing a hijab to cover one’s hair is often interpreted as a sign of modesty, which is why Navid expresses that Shirin’s tight-fitting outfit doesn’t make sense to him. As Shirin explains, however, different people have different relationships to their hijab and different reasons for wearing it. For Shirin, her hijab allows her to feel protected and in control of who can see her, which is why she chooses to continue wearing it despite the bullying she has experienced.
