Teachers and parents! Our Teacher Edition on Al Capone Does My Shirts makes teaching easy.
One of the most infamous real-life criminals of the 1930s, Capone is incarcerated on Alcatraz and is the prison’s highest-profile convict. Piper is intent on seeing and ideally meeting him, and many of her schemes revolve around Capone in some fashion. Moose isn’t nearly as intrigued by Capone, but he does ultimately sneak a letter into the prison for Capone, asking for help getting Natalie into the Esther P. Marinoff School, and Capone somehow helps. Capone’s fictionalized character, and several real-life biographical details, help the novel develop the idea that all people are deserving of respect and dignity, and that they all have something to offer. For instance, while Capone was responsible for up to 200 murders, he also opened the first soup kitchen in Chicago.

Chapter 22: Al Capone’s Mama Quotes

I can’t get over this. I keep thinking about when Al Capone was a baby. I’ll bet his mama sang him the same song she sang to Rocky. I’ll bet she held his hand when they crossed the street, packed his lunch for school and sewed his name into his jacket—A. CAPONE so everyone would know it was his.

I’ll bet she wishes she could do it all over again too...if only Al were little and she could.

When I hang up the phone, I know I have to do something. Have to. I have no idea what. I wonder if this is how my mother feels. How she has always felt.

Now I understand. When you love someone, you have to try things even if they don’t make sense to anyone else.
