Rocky is the fifth Mattaman child; he’s born a few weeks after Moose’s family moves to Alcatraz. Theresa is extremely possessive of her baby brother, insisting before his birth that he’s her baby and later bringing him onto the boat to see Teresina Capone (it’s “history,” and as far as Theresa is concerned, Rocky can’t miss it). Mrs. Capone rocks a screaming Rocky to sleep on the boat, which horrifies Theresa once she realizes who the elderly lady who takes her baby brother actually is.

Chapter 22: Al Capone’s Mama Quotes
I can’t get over this. I keep thinking about when Al Capone was a baby. I’ll bet his mama sang him the same song she sang to Rocky. I’ll bet she held his hand when they crossed the street, packed his lunch for school and sewed his name into his jacket—A. CAPONE so everyone would know it was his.

The Alcatraz children recently witnessed Al Capone’s mother, Mrs. Capone, attempt to visit her son and leave after setting off the metal detectors. They learn later that her corset set off the metal detectors and she was strip-searched, something that greatly disturbs Moose. At the outset of the kids’ trip to see Mrs. Capone, it’s worth noting that the whole point for them was to see Mrs. Capone and to essentially bask in her celebrity, due to her relationship to her son.
