Shaukat Character Analysis

Shaukat, Fozia’s husband and Hafsa’s father, runs a successful produce business at the market. Though Amal sees Shaukat as successful, various incidences suggest his family isn’t as well-off as Amal thinks they are: they have to borrow money to fix their produce stall’s roof and to pay for their older daughter Shabnum’s wedding and dowry. This causes Shaukat immense stress, as he and his family are paying the Khans as much as they can and yet are still being threatened if they can’t come up with more money each month. Nasreen Baji knew Shaukat when they were children and tells Amal that Shaukat had “different dreams” that didn’t include running his father’s produce business, but she never elaborates on this.

Chapter 9 Quotes

“We need his filthy money. Maybe if we all united against him, something could be done. It’s happening more and more these days—people are banding together and overthrowing their landlords. Read about it in the paper all the time.”

“The Khan family would never let that happen here. Remember Hazarabad?” Fozia asked. “The people in that town made a pact. Refused to pay their debts until he stopped with the threats. Forget Munira’s measly acres! He destroyed their entire village. Jawad Sahib sent quite the message!”
