One of the apple pickers in Carlos’s crew in the Yakima Valley. An old-timer who spent much time in the Chicago area, Julio is quick-tempered, as evidenced when he fights Pinoy over the missing wages. When a mob attacks the apple orchard, Julio flees the orchard with Carlos. They eventually cross a mountain reach the Yakima River. Julio advises Carlos to go to Los Angeles and take advantage of its Filipino community. Julio then returns Chicago. He is among Carlos’s first true friends in America.
