Mulch Diggums Character Analysis

Mulch Diggums is a kleptomaniac dwarf who has a skill and passion for digging. Although his constant theft often causes him to get in trouble with the Lower Elements Police, he ends up becoming an asset to them when Root and Foaly use him to infiltrate Fowl Manor by digging up from below. Mulch is one of the few characters in the novel who can outsmart Artemis, perhaps in part because his practical “street smarts” allows him to overcome the more academic Artemis. Although Mulch helps the police, he ultimately outsmarts them, too, using his time out of prison as an excuse to get away and even make off with some gold in the process. Mulch represents the complicated moral world of the story, highlighting how some characters exist in a place between good and evil.

Chapter 7 Quotes

Born to a typical dwarf cavern-dwelling family, Mulch had decided early that mining was not for him and resolved to put his talents to another use, namely digging and entering, generally entering Mud People’s property. Of course this meant forfeiting his magic. Dwellings were sacred. If you broke that rule, you had to be prepared to accept the consequences. Mulch didn’t mind. He didn’t care much for magic anyway. There had never been much use for it down the mines.

Laying his fingers on the tunnel floor like an upturned spider, Mulch waited. It didn’t take long. In seconds he felt the rhythmic thump of an approaching rabbit. Sorry, friend, thought the dwarf. If there was any other way…Pulling the rabbit's body through the hole, Mulch rehinged his jaw and began screaming. “Cave in! Cave in! Help! Help!”
