Atmosphere: Chapter 13 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
It’s the summer of 1982. As the months pass, Vanessa begins working on an assignment that brings her to Cape Canaveral more often, so Joan and Vanessa must spend more time apart. One weekend when they’re both in Houston, Vanessa says that she wants to get in a flight training session with Hank because Hank will actually let her fly the plane from the backseat. Joan responds that she thought she and Vanessa had plans to go out to eat. In that moment, Joan thinks about the fights that she and Vanessa have had. Joan then tells Vanessa that she should go flying. After the flight training session, Vanessa goes to Joan’s apartment and tells Joan how much their relationship has helped Vanessa feel better about her life.
Vanessa’s statement that she wants to fly with Hank because Hank will actually let her operate the plane again points to the limitations that the prevailing culture of misogyny and sexism puts on women in the workplace. In this case, instead of having a formal path to becoming a pilot at NASA, Vanessa must find a man who is willing to help her achieve her goals. Again, while the novel underlines that Hank’s actions are laudable, the book also makes it clear that this approach represents a stopgap solution to systemic issues.

In August, Vanessa says that she wants to go on a trip with Joan. Vanessa talks about a friend of hers who has an airstrip in Florida and says that maybe one day Vanessa could fly Joan to Costa Rica from that airstrip. Vanessa then says that to commemorate the first trip they took together to the Texas coast a year ago, she wants to fly Joan to Glacier National Park in Montana for a picnic. A few days later, during the flight, Joan is amazed by the beauty of the Grand Canyon when they fly over it. She looks at Vanessa and thinks that perhaps God brought the two of them together. They then land in Montana and have a picnic under the stars in Glacier National Park.
