An older boy with whom Rill bonds in the orphanage. James asks Rill to be his girlfriend and she agrees. They talk and hold hands, but James is abruptly sent away when Ida Murphy finds out. This is one of the first times Rill notices how children who cause problems in the orphanage mysteriously disappear without a proper explanation.
