Carletto Beltramini is Pino’s best friend. Over the course of the war, he watches his mother and father die. During the latter’s death, Carletto spots a swastika armband sticking out of Pino’s pocket and thinks his friend is a traitor. The two of them don’t talk again until the war is almost over, at which point Pino can finally reveal that he was actually acting as a spy. Carletto joins Pino on his final mission to take Leyers to the Austrian border.
