Julia de Burgos Character Analysis

Julio de Burgos is a Puerto Rican poet who lived and died in Spanish Harlem. Growing up, Julio, Sapo, and Blanca’s school is named after Julia de Burgos. Despite this, a racist English teacher named Mr. Blessington dismisses de Burgos’s poems as “obscure” and refuses to teach her poetry because he’s prejudiced against Latinx people. Quiñonez uses Mr. Blessington’s attitude to expose the disheartening oppression that Latinx children typically experience in school.
