Frau Iwersen and her husband, Herr Iwersen, own the flower shop across the street from the opulent new home Thomas builds after his election to the senate. She was romantically involved with Thomas as a young woman, but he left her—with rather cruel indifference—to fulfill his role as heir to the Buddenbrook firm. She views Thomas’s remains after his death and emits a single, stifled sob.
