Anton is the Buddenbrooks' butler. The consul hires him at Bethsy's urging, though he is initially wary that the family isn't able to afford to employ additional staff. Anton later serves Thomas Buddenbrook's household. Despite years of loyal service to the Buddenbrooks, a string of financial setbacks ultimately force Thomas to let Anton go.
