James Möllendorpf is a merchant senator from Lübeck. He and his family are part of the Buddenbrooks’ social circle. Möllendorpf, who is diabetic, dies an apparently undignified death in old age—he is found locked inside a rented room, his mouth full of sweets. Thomas runs for election and ultimately wins Möllendorpf’s vacant senate seat.
