Lieutenant von Throta is a Rhinelander. He has dark hair and dark eyes and plays several instruments, making him he is the exact opposite of Thomas Buddenbrook in appearance and ability. Though a military man by title, there is nothing militaristic in the casual, undisciplined way he comports himself. When von Throta starts spending an inordinate amount of time at Thomas’s house to play music with Gerda, a rumor spreads that he is having an affair with Gerda. Thomas suspects as much but can’t bring himself to confront Gerda about the affair.
