Stephen Kistenmaker comes from a local merchant family. The Kistenmakers and Buddenbooks belong to the same social circle. In adulthood, Stephen is Thomas Buddenbrook’s sole friend and confidant. Thomas appoints Kistenmaker the executor of his will, the administrator of his estate, and guardian to Hanno. Thomas left Kistenmaker with a narrow timeframe in which to dissolve the firm and liquidate his assets, and none of the surviving Buddenbrooks are satisfied with Kistenmaker’s handling of Thomas’s affairs.
