Roman Sentinel Character Analysis

The Roman sentinel patrols the pier in front of the palace at Alexandria. In Act III, acting on Caesar’s orders, the sentinel refuses to let Ftatateeta, Apollodorus, and the Egyptian porters proceed to the royal palace to deliver carpets to Cleopatra. The sentinel and Apollodorus get into a heated argument after the sentinel mistakes Apollodorus, a patrician (aristocrat) with a deep appreciation for the arts, for a common carpet merchant. Although Ftatateeta manages to subdue the sentinel, Apollodorus refuses to act on Ftatateeta’s urging to kill the sentinel in retaliation.
