Mr. Forester is Ferdinando Falkland’s elder half-brother. During a visit to Falkland’s manor, Forester befriends Caleb. He also promises to grant Caleb his protection if he should ever need it. But Forester loses his good opinion of Caleb when Falkland accuses him of theft. Because Forester professes to value honesty, justice, and impartiality, he holds an informal trial in which he declares Caleb guilty and insists he go to jail. Then, after Caleb escapes from prison, he posts a reward for his recapture, forcing Caleb to live on the run from the law.
