Explanation and Analysis—The Hot Taste of Life:
In Chapter 32, as Doc looks upon the wreckage of Mack and the boys' second attempt at throwing him a party, he reads from a translation of a poem called Chaurisurata Panchashika, which was composed in Sanskrit in the 11th century by the Kashmiri poet Kavi Bilhana. The version Doc quotes is known as "Black Marigolds" and was translated in the 20th century by E. Powys Mathers. The following is an excerpt from Doc's allusion:
Even now,
I know that I have savored the hot taste of life
Lifting green cups and gold at the great feast.
