Prologue
Explanation and Analysis:
Cannery Row's titular setting is a coastal neighborhood in Monterey, California. It gets its name from the sardine canning facilities that made up a significant part of the local economy. Though Cannery Row is not strictly based on true events, the novel spotlights this neighborhood during the Great Depression of the 1930s to detail how economic downturn took its toll on working class communities across the United States. Like Steinbeck's other works, this book takes a specific interest in the economy of the American West and how it fared in times of struggle.
