Careless People: Chapter 40 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Wynn-Williams is forced to work on Facebook’s relationship with China, perhaps because she has been so vocally against Facebook’s China strategy in the past and is now being tasked with carrying it out as a test of loyalty. While Facebook isn’t in China, ads from Chinese companies are still a major source of income. She sees some documents about what Facebook is pledging to give China and reads between the lines to infer that Facebook is planning to help China on surveillance of citizens. She sees a total indifference from Facebook’s leadership about any human rights abuses that could come out of so much surveillance.
Wynn-Williams has long struggled with the moral implications of working for Facebook, but as more time passes, this bind only becomes harder and harder for her to deal with. She sees Facebook’s willingness to enable things like Chinese state surveillance as a sign of how morally bankrupt Facebook has become, even compared to what it used to be just a few years ago when Wynn-Williams originally came to the company.
