Norma is one of the popular girls at Ewen High School. She is friends with Chris Hargensen and participated in harassing Carrie in the locker room. When the fire breaks out at the gym, Norma grabs her friend Tina, and the two are able to escape before the entire building goes up in flames.

A tampon suddenly struck her in the chest and fell with a plop at her feet. A red flower stained the absorbent cotton and spread.
Then the laughter, disgusted, contemptuous, horrified, seemed to rise and bloom into something jagged and ugly, and the girls were bombarding her with tampons and sanitary napkins, some from purses, some from the broken dispenser on the wall. At the beginning of the novel, Carrie gets her first period while showering in the locker room. When the other girls point it out to her, she panics and begins to scream. The other girls taunt her by throwing tampons and pads at her as she cowers in the corner of the room. The locker room incident that opens Carrie is one of the most iconic opening scenes in horror literature—which is especially notable given that it is not a traditional horror beginning. That was what made people laugh. We couldn’t help it. It was one of those things where you laugh or go crazy. Carrie had been the butt of every joke for so long, and we all felt that we were part of something special that night. It was as if we were watching a person rejoin the human race, and I for one thanked the Lord for it. And that happened. That horror.
And so there was nothing else to do. It was either laugh or cry, and who could bring himself to cry over Carrie after all those years?

Norma Watson, a student at Ewen High School and a survivor of prom night, recounts her experience seeing pig’s blood getting dumped on Carrie. Here, she describes how everyone began to laugh at Carrie after it happened—but that it was partly out of shock rather than a desire to ridicule. This moment, at the climax of the novel, signifies the group mentality among Ewen High School students that has led to this exact incident. Norma’s comment that everyone there felt like they were “part of something special” by watching Carrie be assaulted and humiliated is perhaps the starkest example in Dolorem et quae.
