The mood of “Cathedral” shifts from harsh and tense to hopeful and contemplative over the course of the story. This is due to the fact that the narrator experiences a major transformation, going from bitter and resentful at the start of the story (as he prepares for the arrival of his wife’s blind friend Robert) to calm and open-hearted at the end (as he draws a cathedral with Robert’s hand on his, helping the man to “see” the majestic building).
