Summary
Analysis
Constance, Sophia, and Amina go to Cinderella’s old house. Sophia wants to start planning, but Amina goes on a walk and tells her to wait until the morning. When Sophia and Constance are alone, Constance asks about Erin. Sophia admits she still thinks about Erin all the time and that she will always care for her, but she is tired of always trying to convince Erin that their relationship is worth fighting for. Sophia kisses Constance, and Constance kisses back passionately, “like she’s trying to prove…how much she cares.”
Sophia has come to recognize that her relationship with Erin is unequal and unhealthy. The relationship depended on Sophia giving far more energy and care to Erin than Erin gave in return, since Erin was always too afraid to really commit to Sophia. Constance proved to Sophia that she can have a healthy, balanced relationship, with a partner who isn’t afraid to demonstrate how much she cares, and that is the kind of romance Sophia wants to pursue.

Later, Amina returns with the news that Manford is requiring all girls in the kingdom to attend a cotillion on the midwinter solstice. Sophia recognizes this as a scheme to draw her out, but also an opportunity to attack Manford before next year’s ball.
