Personification and simile give a human touch to Hyder Ali Sahib’s deserted house as Bim and Baba tour its empty rooms. Among its other childhood episodes, Part 2 recounts how the siblings wandered through their neighbor’s abandoned home:
The house was so strangely unlit and deserted as it had never been for as long as they had known it—like a body whose life and warmth they were accustomed to and took for granted, now grown cold and stiff and faded. It looked accusing, too, as if it held them responsible.
