Autua is a Moriori man whom Adam Ewing discovers stowed away in Adam's cabin on the Prophetess. Autua begs Adam to help him, explaining to Adam that he fled his home to escape a life of slavery. Though initially reluctant to help, Adam ultimately befriends Autua and helps him get a job aboard the ship. At the end of the book, Autua saves Adam from Dr. Henry Goose, who had been secretly poisoning Adam over the course of their journey overseas.
