Cloud Cuckoo Land: Chapter 24 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Zeno’s Translation. A final fragment from Cloud Cuckoo Land sees Aethon celebrating his return to Earth. However, it is extremely fragmented, so much so that it lacks complete sentences.
Again, it appears Aethon has achieved his happy ending, though it is hard to grasp anything specific from such a fragmented chunk of text.

Seymour. In the year 2057, Seymour is allowed to live in a modest apartment and go to work every day, though it is implied he still has restrictions on his life due to his past crimes. He is still working for Ilium, helping them with their Atlas line of products. At this point, he has been in regular contact with Natalie Hernandez, one of the children—who is now an adult—from Zeno’s play. Currently, Natalie teaches Latin and Greek to high schoolers.
Here, Seymour continues his redemption story. Although he is still working for Ilium, a corporation that will eventually use Konstance and her family as a science experiment, he also is trying to repair some of the harm he caused in the past. Meanwhile, Zeno’s influence can be seen in Natalie’s choice of a career.

When Seymour turns 58, he embarks on a new project. He does not like that he has been covering up all of the ugly parts of the world on behalf of the Ilium Corporation. As such, he starts hiding images of owls throughout the Atlas database, behind which are the original scans of the Earth. As such, although the truth is hidden, people can still access it if they are willing to look.

Quotes
Around the same time, Seymour puts an invite out to Zeno’s former students. He tells them that he understands if they do not want to come, but he has made something for them in an attempt to atone for his past behavior. Together, Seymour and Zeno’s former students meet up in Lakeport, a trip that Seymour pays for. The students, who are now adults, bring their families with them. One of their children remarks that Seymour does not look like a murderer. When everyone is together, Seymour gives them a copy of Cloud Cuckoo Land. Seymour himself finished the translation with Natalie based on Zeno’s notes. Additionally, Seymour shows them that he has put an owl in the Atlas system where the Lakeport Library used to be, so they can return to the set they created.

Konstance. In the future, Konstance hurriedly makes her way through the Argos. She does not have much oxygen left in her suit, so she moves as quickly as possible. First, she grabs seeds to take with her. Then, she goes to the part of the ship that Elliot Fischenbacher tried to break out of. Swiftly, Konstance begins swinging her makeshift ax at the wall, unsure of whether she is doing the right thing.

For a moment, Konstance worries that she might really be out in space and is therefore about to kill herself. However, at this point, there is no going back. Eventually, Konstance makes a hole in the ship big enough for her to crawl out of. It is dark and rainy outside, and no one is around. Konstance takes off her suit and breathes in the fresh air, although she is not sure whether it is safe. On the horizon, the sun begins to rise.
