Daddy (Diddly) Character Analysis

Daddy is Anne’s father. Anne, Mama, and her sister Adline live with him on Mr. Carter’s plantation at the beginning of the memoir. He is a gambler with a short temper. During Anne’s childhood, he has an affair with a woman named Florence and leaves the family. After this split, Mama refuses help from him in supporting the children. When Anne gets in touch with him again as a teenager after she runs away from her mother’s house, he is married to a woman named Emma. Despite their troubled past, he excitedly takes Anne into his home and shows that he has improved as a father.
