Concrete Rose

by Angie Thomas
Jamal is Mr. Wyatt’s nephew. He’s attending community college and works in Mr. Wyatt’s store part time. Maverick never does anything but nod to Jamal and doesn’t seem to know him well, but he thinks that Jamal is a nerd and that it’s not worth aspiring to be like him. To Mr. Wyatt, though, Jamal is an example of what’s possible for young Black men in Garden Heights: if they’re not affiliated with a gang, they can receive an education and ultimately get out of Garden Heights.
