Key Examples in Cry, the Beloved Country
Setting
Explanation and Analysis:
Though set in 20th-century, pre-apartheid South Africa, Paton’s novel hardly stays put. Cry, the Beloved Country is a tale of movement: Stephen Kumalo sets foot into Johannesburg’s unfamiliar urban world, briefly visits a home for the blind at Ezenzeleni, and travels door-to-door in search of his son. Meanwhile, Black city residents walk to support the bus boycott, and Gertrude runs off to the convent. Paton’s work captures the flux of escape and migration.
