Detective Miller and his partner Detective Mason represent the oppressive system of law enforcement in Easy’s life. Miller, the more senior partner, is tall and thin, and his demeanor is cold and calculating. Though less overtly aggressive than Mason, his composed and methodical nature makes him an intimidating presence. Easy notes a crescent scar beneath Miller’s right eye, a feature that feels oddly familiar. Miller and Mason first appear when they strongarm Easy outside his home and bring him to the station for questioning about Coretta and Dupree. Their focus on Easy throughout the story stems more from their racial biases and desire to pin the crime on an easy target—such as a person of color—rather than from substantial evidence. At the end of the story, Easy admits to Miller that Junior Fornay is responsible for Richard McGee’s murder.
