Diamond Boy: Chapter 32 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
A man in a white mask and a floral cap asks Patson how he got here. Patson says it’s a long story. The man introduces himself as Dr. David Morris. He’s going to fix up Patson’s leg. Patson realizes he’s in an operating room. Another woman offers Patson a mask and asks him to count to 10. Patson only makes it to six. He wakes up to someone telling him his mother is here to see him. Patson would like to tell his mother so much—he used to talk to her every day after school. Patson regains consciousness fully, and he knows his mother can’t be here. He opens his eyes to see the Wife, but he can’t make himself ask the nurse for help.
The chapter begins with what seems like a positive development: Patson is finally receiving an important surgery to clean up his leg. However, Patson soon finds himself plunged back into a nightmare when the Wife appears, posing as his mother. This is especially cruel, given how close Patson was with his biological mother and the fact that he and the Wife have never gotten along. And given her previous actions, it seems likely the Wife is here only to enrich herself, not because she cares for Patson.

Once the nurse is gone, the Wife stops smiling and asks where the girazis are. She begins digging through Patson’s items. She throws Patson’s blankets off and deems his leg “disgusting.” Patson insists he doesn’t know where the diamonds are, and the Wife tells Patson that Commander Jesus always gets what he wants. A few minutes later, Commander Jesus enters with a wheelchair. He tells Patson that Patson wouldn’t have lost his leg had he just handed over the girazis. Once the Wife has gathered all Patson’s things, Commander Jesus lifts Patson into the wheelchair and says they’re going to go talk like men about mining.
Commander Jesus cruelly and inappropriately blames Patson for stepping on the land mine. This increases Patson’s sense of powerlessness. Further, Patson seems to be in real danger here as Commander Jesus and the Wife pose as wanted family members to try and kidnap Patson from the hospital. But as a frightened teen, and on one leg, Patson has little ability to advocate for himself in the moment.
