Mary is the other Wes’s mother. Like Joy, she had to raise her children without a father around. Mary was at Johns Hopkins on a Pell Grant, until the government slashed the budget for these grants in the 1980s, forcing her to drop out of college. Wes (the author) speculates on the possible snowball effect this event had on the other Wes’s life, contributing to the series of bad choices he made later in life.
