Liberius Mikulitsyn Character Analysis

Liberius is a partisan commander and the son of Mikulitsyn. Liberius ran away from home at a young age and volunteered to fight in World War I before returning home to lead the Forest Brotherhood against the White Army. Liberius’s young age and quick success as a commander have made him arrogant and abrasive, and he also develops a cocaine habit. Liberius has a strained relationship with his father, and their broadly shared socialist sympathies do not prevent them from bitterly disagreeing about the Bolsheviks. After his partisans kidnap Yuri Zhivago, Liberius takes a liking to Yuri and keeps him around as a captive discussion partner, eagerly lecturing him on the virtues of communism and the Red Army’s inevitable victory. Despite his convictions, Liberius is also a smooth political operator who does not hesitate to eliminate rivals like Vdovichenko when the opportunity presents itself.

“[…] I grant that you’re all bright lights and liberators of Russia, that without you she would perish, drowned in poverty and ignorance, and nevertheless I can’t be bothered with you, and I spit on you, I don’t like you, and you can all go to the devil.

“The rulers of your minds indulge in proverbs, but they’ve forgotten the main one, that love cannot be forced, and they have a deeply rooted habit of liberating people and making them happy, especially those who haven’t asked for it. You probably fancy that there’s no better place in the world for me than your camp and your company. I probably should even bless you and thank you for my captivity, for your having liberated me from my family, my son, my home, my work, from everything that’s dear to me and that I live by.”
