Daphne Character Analysis in Dry

Daphne is Uncle Basil’s on-again, off-again girlfriend. She was a realtor in Modesto until the Pacific Dust Bowl was declared, and when it became clear none of her listings were going to sell, she moved to her mother’s house in Dove Canyon. Though Uncle Basil moved with her, she broke up with him and kicked him out twice. However, she allows Uncle Basil to move back in with her when the Tap-Out begins to help out Alyssa’s mom and Alyssa’s dad. Daphne ultimately dies of dysentery from drinking water from Dove Canyon’s old water tank.
