From the Ashes

From the Ashes

by Jesse Thistle
Summary
Analysis
In jail, Jesse overhears a fellow inmate being murdered over stealing a bag of chips. He resolves to keep his mouth shut to the guards, out of fear of retaliation from the other prisoners, who abhor “snitching.” He wonders why he is in jail, and then says, “I did it to save my leg—and my life.”
This brief vignette gives a taste of the brutal world Jesse inhabits, a criminal world where “snitching” is considered the greatest transgression. Interestingly, Jesse suggests that his presence in jail was a choice, though why this might be—and how jail “saved his leg”—remains unexplained for now.
