The serpent is the craftiest animal in the garden of Eden. He questions Eve about God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and he suggests that, contrary to what God has said, she and Adam won’t actually die if they eat its fruit—instead they’ll become godlike in their knowledge. Because of this, God curses the serpent to crawl in the dust and to forever suffer the hostility of Eve’s offspring.

and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
