The Girls of Slender Means

Dorothy Markham Character Analysis

Dorothy Markham is one of the May of Teck girls. She is the working-class niece of Lady Julia Markham, who serves as chairwoman on the May of Teck Club’s management committee. Dorothy is a slim girl, and one of few who can effortlessly fit through the slit window in the lavatory. After the fire breaks out, Dorothy is the first girl to climb out the skylight window once firemen manage to break through. When she emerges on the roof, her hair white from dust and rubble, she looks “curiously like her aunt, Lady Julia.”
