Part 2: The Prayers of the Saints: Gabriel’s Prayer
Explanation and Analysis—Roy's "Royalty" :
In another instance of intentional character naming, Baldwin evokes situational irony through Royal's naming. Gabriel intends to name his first son Royal because of his status as the first male of the new generation. Royal is considered to be "royal" because of patriarchal standards of inheritance. It is he, rather than any potential daughters, who will carry Gabriel's name and legacy forward—much like first sons in monarchical systems throughout history. However, there is irony in the fact that Royal is conceived out of wedlock: a sin that shapes Gabriel's worldview. Because Gabriel had an affair with Esther, Royal would not be considered "royal" by any biblical standards of marriage and "legitimate" conception.
