Good Night, Mr. Tom

by Michelle Magorian

Tom Oakley Character Analysis

Tom Oakley is an outwardly curmudgeonly, antisocial widower living in the rural English village of Little Weirwold. After his wife Rachel and infant son William died of scarlet fever, 40 years before the story takes place, Tom put away Rachel’s things and withdrew from social life to avoid being reminded of his grief. Yet when a government official places 8-year-old William Beech in Tom Oakley’s house during the evacuation of vulnerable civilians from London at the beginning of World War II, Tom quickly becomes attached to William, who is artistic like Rachel and has the same last name as his dead baby boy. Tom offers William Rachel’s paint box, which he has been keeping shut away in a closet, helps teach William to read and write, and treats William with compassion and understanding. Feeling greater social responsibility now that he is the guardian of a child, Tom also gets more involved with village life in Little Weirwold and volunteers in various community efforts, watching for bombs with the Fire Watchers and playing the organ for the church choir. After William’s abusive mother Mrs. Beech summons him back to London for a visit, Tom becomes very worried when William doesn’t send any letters back to Little Weirwold. He travels to London to find William, saves him from the cupboard where Mrs. Beech has abandoned him tied to a pipe, and “kidnaps” him from the hospital back to Little Weirwold when the authorities plan to put him in an orphanage. Toward the novel’s end, after Mrs. Beech dies by suicide, Tom adopts William, making their father-son relationship legally official.
