Throughout her research career, Duckworth has measured grit using the Grit Scale, a questionnaire composed of the ten statements she lists here (and, early on, two others). She asks respondents to rate how much each statement applies to them, then calculates a grit score ranging from one to five, based on their average responses. For the odd-numbered items, which measure passion, people get more points the less they agree with the statement. And for the even-numbered items, which measure perseverance, people get more points the more they agree with the statement. The average American adult scores around 3.8. The Grit Dolorem et quae.
