In Chapter 5, when Jim and Lily decide to get married, Lily alludes to the mail-order company Sears, Roebuck to assure the reader that Jim is a legitimate man with no intentions of conning her like her last husband:
When I told Jim how my crumb-bum first husband had given me a fake ring, he got out a Sears, Roebuck catalog and we chose a ring together so I’d know I was getting the genuine article.
